Homework for Friday, 27th May 2016
World of Magic: Keep an eye out for different objects this week. Look at them and try and think about their potential “magic quality”. Attach a very short story or create a fictitious history about that object. For example: A MAGIC PINE CONE…When planted grows a tree that causes all who sit under it to fall asleep and have very interesting dreams!
Write a one page story or history about how that particular object got its magic powers. The point is to have fun with this, but DO NOT be silly! Don’t over think it :)

Homework for Friday, 13th May 2016
We have done a lot of work this year on character traits and what it means to be a good person.
A quick reminder: Character traits are all the aspects of a person’s behavior and attitudes that make up that person’s personality. Everyone has character traits, both good and bad.
Now that we’re getting into explorers, you will start to learn that they were all similar and different. Some of their character traits were the same and some not so much. Explain what character traits you think a good explorer should have (pick at least 4) and explain why you think they are important to being a good explorer.
To help you along, here are some different types of character traits: (if you are not sure what some mean, look them up!)
Adventurous, Affable, Conscientious, Cultured, Dependable, Discreet, Fair, Fearless, Observant, Impartial, Independent, Optimistic, Intelligent, Keen, Gregarious, Persistent, Capable, Charming, Precise, Confident, Dutiful, Encouraging, Reliable, Exuberant, Helpful, Humble, Suave, Imaginative, Meticulous, Obedient, Trusting, Valiant and Responsible.

Write a creative, descriptive and meaningful paragraph about why we should care about our planet. You’ve had some fun writing descriptively over the past couple of weeks, so continue to do so and have fun with it. You must remember that your paragraph must still follow the same rules as any other paragraph.
-an introductory sentence
-supporting details
-an effective concluding sentence
Try to send a message in this paragraph, really explaining why we must look after and care about the beautiful planet we live on.

Homework for Friday, April 22nd 2016
“The aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because of their simplicity and familiarity. One is unable to notice something because it is always before one’s eyes.” –Ludwig Wittgenstein.
Exercise #1: Where you are right now can be powerful…
Write 10 things about where you are sitting right now (at home) that you hadn’t noticed when you sat down. Use your senses. Do it quickly. Do not censor. Okay, begin!
For example: (you are sitting in a chair in your living room)
-Blinking red light on the blu ray player
-Small screw hole on the upper right part of the wall
-Crack in the hardwood floor
-The smell of mom’s cooking
Exercise #2: Found Smells…
Go for a walk with a family member. Make a list of all the smells in your neighbourhood or area of town. Be as detailed as possible and attempt to identify the sources.
For example: Freshly baked bread from the baker. Cut grass in the school yard. Sawdust from the house being built beside me. Stinky dog poop from that didn’t get picked up…EEEWWWW!!!

“Writing with Voice”
We’ve been learning about Voice and how powerful it can be using it while you write. Write 3-5 sentences about a character walking to or from school. Each sentence must show a different type of voice.
For example:
Jon slowly dragged his feet with his hands in his pockets as he walked down the street to school. He let out a long and shallow sigh as he thought about yesterday’s events. He couldn’t believe that happened! His head remained down and his pace slow until he arrived at the last place he wanted to be.
We can infer that this character is SAD, even though the word “sad” is never actually used.
Try writing 5 separate sentences were the reader can infer that the character is:
1. HAPPY
2. EXCITED
3. ANGRY
4. DEPRESSED
5. CONFUSED
(or come up with a voice or emotion of your own!)

Homework for Friday, April 8th 2016
Think of an adjective (something that describes a noun). For example the word “round”. Write the word down in the middle of the page and then over the course of the week, document things that relate to that adjective (see the picture for guidance). Different adjectives could be: Flat, Pointy, Triangular, Rectangular, Sharp, Soft, Hard etc.
Be creative, be artistic, think hard, add as many things as you can and most importantly…have fun with this!

Where did you go over Spring Break? Was this destination planned? What attracted you and your family to this particular place? Would you go back again? Why or why not?
Compose a paragraph that focuses on your holiday using the questions above as a guide. Please be sure that your paragraph is properly formatted with an introduction, supporting details (elaborated) and conclusion. If you ‘stay-cationed’, then please use the guide questions to elaborate on an experience that you had over the break. (ex. Science World, The Aquarium, The Planetarium etc.)

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT:
Watch the following inspirational music video by Tim McGraw. In the video, Tim McGraw refers to being humble and kind. What does it mean to you to be humble and kind? Explain in a paragraph using specific examples to support your thinking. You may need to look up the definition of humble, or maybe you will be able to infer its meaning through listening to the song itself.

Homework for Friday, 12th February 2016
With ‘Chris Temple’ coming in next week as a guest speaker for the 4-7 division, we thought (as your teachers) it might be nice if you did some general background research on him to figure out who he is and what he is all about! After that basic research is done, try to think of one or two powerful questions you’d like to ask him. He’s a pretty interesting and amazing guy, we hope you have fun learning more about him!
Here is some initial info to start with from his website:
